  • OA 1.3 : Students build their own camera obscurae.
  • OA 2.1 : Students match the theory of polar night with the sun's trajectories in their own photos.
  • OA 2.2 : Students discover how the Inuit explained the polar day.
  • OA 2.3 : Students draw a picture to illustrate the legend told.

Program

Attention : This workshop is divided into two individual workshops. The first will take place around December 1, the second at the end of June.

Visit PART ONE is dedicated to the life and exploration of Antarctica:

  • By way of introduction, we'll be talking about the Antarctic Treaty and its importance for research and peace.
  • Using maps, videos, Globi, flashlights and live photos, we'll study the tilt of the Earth's axis and the resulting polar day.
  • We'll also explain to students what life is like on an Antarctic research station, using personal anecdotes and images.
  • As a complement to the theory, we'll be making a «camera obscurae» with each learner, which they can hang in their homes.
  • Finally, we'll talk about how this camera works and what it's supposed to «photograph».

The second part will be devoted to life in the Arctic:

  • A short review will enable learners to recall the previous workshop.
  • Next, we'll examine the photos developed by the learners using their Obscurae cameras. Together, we'll see that the bands represented are the orbits of the sun. Those at the bottom correspond to winter, those at the top to summer.
  • While the facilitator reads an Inuit legend, learners are invited to paint an important moment from the legend. The legend tells how the Inuit once explained the polar day.
  • The workshop ends with a feedback session and the return of the photos.

Methodological approaches

  • Analysis of video material and globes
  • Lens construction
  • Analysis of their own photos
  • Drawing a story

Remarks

  • For learners ages 10-13
  • Available in German/Luxembourgish (French/English only on request and availability of our experts)
  • Feesphoto development will cost 150€ for 10 photos/students (prices subject to change). No guarantee that the results will be usable. The quality of the photos depends on the installation and handling of the camera by the learners.
  • We need a completely dark room (without windows) and equipped with electricity. Without such a room, we will NOT be able to organize the first workshop in December.
  • Each child must bring a soda can, coffee can or similar closed metal container.
  • For the second workshop drawing tools are required.
