Objectives

Amnesty International is a global movement that defends human rights and fights against abuses. Our vision is of a world in which every human being enjoys all the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international documents.

What we do :

- Preventing and denouncing serious human rights violations

- Defending the victims of these violations and demanding reparation

- Promote all the indivisible, universal rights set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948): civil and political, economic, social and cultural rights.

Our principles:

- Solidarity

- Impartiality

- Independence

Program

Amnesty International believes that human rights education can address the underlying causes of human rights abuses, prevent violations from taking place, combat discrimination, promote equality and enhance participation in decision-making processes.

The aim of human rights education is to create a culture of respect for human rights, and to prevent human rights violations. The ability to demand respect for human rights requires education, training and awareness-raising.

Methodological approaches

–   Educational file

Each year, AIL publishes a teaching pack on a human rights theme (e.g. freedom of expression, human rights defenders, sexual and reproductive rights, children and poverty, etc.). These kits are designed for teachers who want to talk about human rights with their students. Practical activities, games and exercises are suggested, numerous testimonials illustrate the themes and, finally, proposals for concrete action are offered to teachers who would like to take action with their class to concretely support one or more person(s) whose human rights have been violated.

–   Interactive workshops

An animator can come and lead an interactive workshop in the classroom. The theme is usually the year's theme (that of the teaching pack), but we remain open to discussion and can adapt to the needs of teachers and the interests of students, depending on our capabilities. Our workshops are designed to introduce students to specific human rights themes, using short videos, concrete examples and testimonials. Finally, during our workshops, students have the opportunity to take concrete action, on their own scale, to support people.

–   Photo exhibition

A photo exhibition is available. Easy to set up in a classroom, hallway, canteen or elsewhere, this exhibition tells the story of 10 men and 10 women who defend human rights around the world.

–   Supervision of various human rights events in schools and high schools

Would you like to set up a specific project with your class or across your school? Our human rights education team can provide you with ideas, materials, information and other resources for taking action on human rights. Every gesture counts, and Amnesty can offer its support to students and/or teachers who want to organize an event or set up a project around human rights.

–   Visit to the section's premises.

Teachers can bring their students to visit Amnesty International's Luxembourg section, to give them an insight into the workings of an international NGO. The visit can be combined with a human rights education workshop.
