Duration

50 min - 120 min (depending on your requirements)

Location

in your high school, school

Objectives

The workshop provides an initial introduction to the subject of gender and equality between women and men. A theoretical part makes young people aware of inequalities in the North and South in areas as diverse as health, education, work and the media. The workshop can talk about the differences between North and South, either from a country in the South, or from Luxembourg, since even in Luxembourg we still haven't achieved total equality. Various activities are designed to make this workshop highly interactive.

Program

We'll start the workshop with a historical review of women's rights, so that students can understand exactly what equal opportunity means. If you wish, we can go into more detail on different aspects of gender equality (inequalities in the workplace, health, violence, etc.). Then we'll look at what a stereotype is and why it's so difficult to counter stereotypes.

To understand these inequalities, students will work on different advertisements (video or print). Using a questionnaire, students will unmask the various stereotypes and inequalities between the sexes. Depending on the age of the students or the teacher's wishes, texts elaborating on specific cases of gender (in)equality can be added.

At the end of the workshop we summarize what we've seen and how we can counter stereotypes and inequalities.

Methodological approaches

Each workshop consists of a theoretical part where we work together to summarize the problem. This is followed by a more active part, which changes according to the age of the students. For younger students, we might prepare a series of images to comment on, or educational games. For older students, we offer text/video analysis, role-playing or positioning games.

Our approach is to provide students with enough information to discover the conclusion themselves. After a moment of realization/study, they structure what they have learned. The aim is to bring about a change in thinking/behavior so that they become active players in our society.

Remarks

We can adapt the content of our workshop to the level or pre-knowledge of your students. Our workshops are designed for students aged 10+, but can be adapted for younger students. We could also include your wishes regarding the content (if you'd like us to talk about a certain country, for example, or just one aspect of the issue).
