Duration

2 to 3 hours

Location

school classroom

Objectives

  • Understand the interdependence between North and South, and the fact that each individual can contribute to preserving the environment at different levels (individual gesture/behavior, support for a cause, etc.),
  • Analyze and understand the challenges posed by deforestation and its impact on climate change
  • Reflect on potential courses of action at their level
  • Encourage discussion and exchange between students; right to speak up
  • Reflecting in a group and developing the ability to work in a group
  • familiarize themselves with the French language in a different context, in the case of activities in French.

Program

Prerequisite without exception Prerequisite for classroom activities: read the introduction to the book.“Mission: Stopp die Armut!” or «Mission: Stop Poverty!», as well as the story entitled “Brasilien - Wenn Lebensräume zerstört werden...».

The intervention begins with a question-and-answer session on their knowledge. The story is then retold in the students' own words. Groups then work together to answer 2 questions: the causes and consequences of deforestation, followed by a group discussion. Each group's answers, placed on individual cards, will then be placed on a problem tree drawn on the board. The facilitator will, of course, provide explanations and concrete examples, and will also add to the discussion. In the next phase, the pupils are invited to discuss possible courses of action to protect the forest.

Finally, young people will be asked to get involved by drawing up a symbolic contract in favor of forest preservation.

An evaluation quiz for students and a questionnaire for teachers will be provided to give feedback on the intervention. A letter and tips document will be given to students to inform their parents of their participation.

Methodological approaches

The workshop is built around didactic and interactive methods based on the book.

Frères des Hommes is looking for a medium-term collaboration with the school. This means that this awareness-raising workshop is only the first step in an awareness-raising program. Depending on the expectations and available resources of each party, 2 to 3 activities will be organized to provide pupils with an in-depth approach to this complex issue, followed by an open forum for expression and discussion.

Remarks

The involvement and commitment of management and a group of teachers/educators are essential to the success of the awareness-raising project and to ensure that the experience has a multiplier effect.
