Objectives
Smartphones and digitalization are an important part of our lives. They facilitate communication everywhere, in the global North, in the global South and of course between North and South. Devices are getting smaller and smaller, and consuming more and more energy.
Our cell phone increasingly controls our social life, it's much more than just a phone, and if the Internet were a country, it would be the third largest consumer of energy behind the USA and China.
Program
But what's inside my cell phone? In this workshop, students search for clues and discover different aspects of cell phones. They explore the inside of the device, learn what raw materials it contains and discover the «global life cycle», from production to use to disposal.
We focus on different issues: raw materials, the link between cell phones and human rights, e-waste, the role of digitization in Luxembourg and Africa, and we look at the link between cell phones and climate change and the role of politics.
Finally, we'll work together to find ways to make digitization more sustainable.
