The Fairtrade School project is an awareness-raising program managed by a steering committee comprising representatives of the NGO Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg, the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, We also work with the Department of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, the Boutiques du Monde working group «Aarbeschtsgrupp Weltbutteker» and teachers. At present, 27 schools in the Grand Duchy are Fairtrade School certified and committed to fair trade.

Students, supported by teachers, become active players in their school:
- Raising awareness of North/South inequalities among other students and teachers
- Raising awareness among other students and teachers of the living and working conditions of producers in the South
- Raising awareness of fair trade among other students and teachers
- Educating other students and teachers about the role of the consumer

Program

Creation of a Fairtrade School management committee within the school

The committee is made up of a minimum of 5 people, representing students and teachers. Students can join the committee at any time if they wish to get involved.

Labelled products

Fairtrade School-certified establishments permanently offer Fairtrade products in meeting and conference rooms. If the establishment has vending machines, Fairtrade snacks and drinks must also be offered as an alternative to conventional products.

Visibility of the Fairtrade School

The Fairtrade School partners communicate about the project and their awareness-raising activities both within and outside the school community.

Awareness-raising and education

The Fairtrade School committee organizes at least one large-scale awareness-raising event on fair trade during the school year.

Methodological approaches

The idea is to gradually introduce the theme of fair trade into the subjects taught at school, and to motivate teachers to work on this issue in several stages. The theme of fair trade can be integrated into a wide range of subjects, and can thus be approached in its entirety and in a cross-disciplinary manner. The impact on students, their understanding of the subject, and even their commitment will thus be greater, since they will have had time not only to assimilate the information, but also to question it, discuss it with others, and exchange their ideas and impressions.

Remarks

Each student member of the Fairtrade School committee is awarded a diploma at the end of the school year.
