Objectives

OA1: Students simulate the flow dynamics of glaciers using a viscous mass.
OA2: Students study sea-level rise and how it is influenced by glaciers on land and those already in the water.
OA3: Students analyze how the slope angle, snowpack structure, and obstacles influence avalanche formation.
OA4: Students measure temperature differences between the ground and the snow using thermal cameras.
(OA= learning objective)

Program

This workshop explains, in four steps, the formation and development of glacial avalanches and landslides in the context of climate change.

Using our specially designed equipment, we analyze the (1) flow velocity of a glacier. Children can participate by adding paint or objects to our glacier and describing the differences in flow velocity.
The same will apply to our experiment on (1) avalanches. In this experiment, students study how an avalanche moves with and without obstacles and at what angle it begins to move.
The experiment on (3) the albedo effect is a must. We recreate various Arctic landscapes in terrariums, and it’s up to the students to measure the temperatures using heat-measuring devices and work together to come up with the answer.
We also analyze the impact of glaciers on sea-level rise, particularly how the location of glaciers makes a difference.
For all workshops, students must make careful observations so that we can work together to develop the answer.

Methodological approaches

-Mockup Analysis
-Temperature Analysis
-Soil Analysis

Remarks

-Ideal for learners of 10–15 years old (can be adapted for older students)

-When working with flour and sugar, it's important to use a plastic sheet to protect the tables and floor.
-We'll bring a tablecloth, but you should expect some stains.

-Polar.lu charges €60 for a 1-hour workshop, plus the cost of materials (to be determined)
