Objectives

The workshop aims to introduce children and young people to …

  • … to North-South issues, specifically as they relate to our food
  • … along with the consequences of the choices we make here in the North, which nonetheless affect the lives of people in the Third World.
  • … and the consequences of our consumption of animal products
  • … the connection between the North and the South
  • … food waste
  • … sustainable agriculture/fair trade.

Program

We will begin the workshop by discussing the world’s population and the right to food. The students will conclude that hunger is still the leading cause of death worldwide.

This theoretical section is followed by the «String Game,» in which all students will take on an «identity» (an aspect of the production chain). Students must connect these different identities

For older students, we can incorporate a role-playing activity in which different groups will take on the role of a different player in the production chain. The goal of this role-playing activity is to convince a Luxembourgish or European politician (the facilitator) to enact new laws regarding the international market.

To wrap up the workshop on a positive note, we’ll work together to come up with solutions to this unsustainable production practice.

Methodological approaches

Each workshop consists of a theoretical part where we work together to summarize the problem. This is followed by a more active part, which changes according to the age of the students. For younger students, we might prepare a series of images to comment on, or educational games. For older students, we offer text/video analysis, role-playing or positioning games.

Our approach is to provide students with enough information to discover the conclusion themselves. After a moment of realization/study, they structure what they have learned. The aim is to bring about a change in thinking/behavior so that they become active players in our society.

Remarks

We can adapt the content of our workshop to the level or pre-knowledge of your students. Our workshops are designed for students aged 10+, but can be adapted for younger students. We could also include your wishes regarding the content (if you'd like us to talk about a certain country, for example, or just one aspect of the issue).
