Objectives

Raise students' awareness of waste management and sustainable development, while promoting responsible citizenship among young people

The issue of waste concerns us all, whether we consider the volume of waste produced by a resident of Luxembourg, the figures for food waste, or the 6 million tonnes of electronic waste exported to the African continent... so many examples that encourage awareness and prompt action.

Learning objectives :

- Be informed and aware of the types and volumes of waste produced in Luxembourg, the negative consequences of irresponsible consumption and the problem of treatment, which have an impact on the environment, the populations of the South and the climate.

- understand and analyze the stakes and challenges of a more sustainable and fairer form of development, based in particular on a model of over-consumption and the waste it generates

- realize that being a citizen means playing an active role in society, and that every action has an impact on other realities

- promote waste prevention and respect for the benefits of waste sorting

- pass on the values of respect for the environment and human beings to those around them

Program

Frères des Hommes has a fun and original exhibition entitled «DéchetLand, agissons ensemble pour réduire nos déchets», which is supported by Valorlux. Based on this exhibition, the animation aims to raise young people's awareness of the causes and consequences of the waste produced in Luxembourg in particular, the types of waste and the players involved, citizen action and prevention, and the impact on the South.

Based on an individual questionnaire, a reading of the exhibition and a quiz game, students are encouraged to reflect on their consumption and waste, and to ask themselves questions in order to extract the main messages.

This is followed by a brief introduction to the concept of sustainable development, with its 4 pillars, before moving on to the positioning game and lively debate.

Methodological approaches

Frères des Hommes is looking for a medium-term collaboration with the school. This means that this awareness-raising workshop is only the first step in an awareness-raising program. Depending on the expectations and available resources of each party, 2 to 3 activities will be organized to provide pupils with an in-depth approach to this complex issue, followed by an open forum for young people to express their views.

The workshops are based on interactive methodologies.

Remarks

The involvement and commitment of management and a group of teachers/educators are essential to the success of the awareness-raising project and to ensure that the experience has a multiplier effect.
